6. A Watery Commons

2022
Video: 4 minutes, 40 seconds
Found footage “Archive New Zealand” via Youtube

Apart of my ongoing exploration of cross cultural belonging; this two part video work recounts my own personal experience with grief and the comfort I have found in Astrida Neimanis’ “Hydrofeminism: Or, On Becoming a Body of Water”.

The video is made up of archival footage from documentaries on New Zealand’s landscapes and lifestyle in the 60’s, which I then accompany with a spoken script. In Part One, I indulge in memory. Part Two however, remedies my longings with direct referencing back to Neimanis, her words speaking to the interconnectedness of lineage, family and history that lives on in water.

As the video moves through laced imagery of ocean, ice, whiskey and waves, I hope for these various bodies of water to to be read as all that it contains: a little of the Pacific and perhaps a few loved ones. The cyclical nature; a waterdrop is never gone, only reformed elsewhere.
